What’s in a name?

You may be wondering why I chose the name “Dragons & Mousetraps” for my blog – and rightly so. It’s odd, each element doesn’t link to the other, and it does sound just a tiny bit crazy.

It all started with an essay I had to write in high school (which prompted my English teacher to ask whether I had been taking something when I wrote it…I twisted the topic in the most creative way possible and needless to say have never looked back – or been looked at in the same way again!). This essay eventually gave me an idea for a book. I have yet to decide how far I’m going to take the book and the designated audience for said book (it’s complex), however I hope you will one day get to read a book titled “Dragons and Mousetraps”. Or perhaps a trilogy or saga – one never knows! So don’t steal my name or idea, OK? It’s protected by copyright…and I’m not afraid to fight for what’s mine (much like a dragon would over its hoard).

I love fantasy and sci-fi, so dragons are definitely going to feature on this blog. Mouse traps, not so much, but both are symbolic. You see, we live in a world where there are many pitfalls, where the strange and unknown often beckons, and where there is definitely light to be found amongst the darkness. I will break down the elements, in order to lead you to greater understanding (and hopefully not chase you away – my ramblings and terrible jokes have been known to do this, sometimes).

Dragons may be described as chimeric, multi-faceted creatures, I suppose – they may be fiery, cold, scaly, leathery, ugly, iridescent, beautiful or scary and, most often, are the wisest creatures of all. There are many types, and hence they are a symbol for the rather haphazard and slightly polymathic slant my posts take. I have an interest in many things, and am quite opinionated, so you will never really know what will come next, or whether it’ll be about something “good” or something “bad”. I like it that way.

Mousetraps are just that – traps for the unwary, but also tools to be used to remove the unwanted aspects of our lives. I personally wouldn’t use an actual mouse trap, nor do I condone killing animals without reason, but they are still a useful symbol. Besides, a mouse trap does feature in the book I mentioned (you’ll just have to wait and see how, though – there’s no way I’m letting that cat out of the bag just yet). They are therefore also a symbol for my ambivalence towards many things – because I’m complex and like to make things more so just for the fun of it, or sometimes less so if I am feeling benevolent that day. It keeps people on their toes.

Now that you know part of the reason why I have chosen this name, I hope you will keep an eye out for my posts and let me know what you think – I’d love to hear from you.

I’m not much of a sci-fiction or creative writer. I applaud you for beginning the long and arduous journey of beginning a book!

    • Thanks for taking the time to visit my blog 🙂 Funnily enough, I have about 7 books that have been “works in progress” for many years – I am hoping to have time to get at least one final draft finished this year! I definitely agree with the “long and arduous” description. I started writing some of said books when I was 12…

Love this! I also love fantasy and especially dragons and I am looking forward to reading your books…in whatever order they eventually come out!
I write about dragons as I have one…you don’t have to believe me…but I cannot wait to ride one and fervently pray every day that he must please manifest into the tangible world…
…and sorry…I don’t like killing things either but I don’t fancy a mouse wreaking havoc in my office cupboards…any suggestions besides a mousetrap are eagerly awaited!
